The first K-I-L-L DJ that we are introduced to is Wild Wally Watson, who is playing the music during the girl’s party, in dorm suite 420, in Chapter 5.
We find out he tends to be a thorn on the side of Lovable Lance and Mr. Ketner as well (Trying to use his wife’s bacon drippings in the popcorn machine).
In a later chapter, he unleashes a rant a Mykel and Sherry about Lovable Lance and Mr. Ketner’s leadership, the format and the current Top-40 hits. Here is a sample (How many hits do you recognize):
“Well, that’s a lost cause,” Wally growled. “Kids today are stupid. All they do is watch television and listen to this bad music we play on this station. The only good songs we are playing are ‘Nashville Cats’, ‘Somewhere My Love’, ‘Born Free’, and ‘The Green, Green Grass of Home.’ Only four good songs! The rest of it just sounds like vulgar noise to me. Just like this stupid song. I doubt anyone will even know who Sonny and Cher are in 25 years. I can guarantee people will have forgotten Bob Dylan by the year 1980. I wish I was working at K-B-U-B or one of the other radio stations, because they cater to adults rather than kids. My wife and I didn’t want to have kids, yet I am being forced to entertain them.”
“It was bad enough that last spring we were playing all of those Batman songs,” Wally continued to bitch. “In the summer, we played a song about Peter Rabbit and one about the Pied Piper, now we are playing a song about Snoopy and one about Little Red Riding Hood,” Wally the crushed the cigarette out in the ash tray and continued his rant. “We’ve got songs about puppets, ballerinas, carousels, spacemen, babies sleeping on a train, a knight in rusty armor, a yellow submarine, and two songs about dancing bears, but at least it’s not that weird stuff Lance and Mr. Ketner want you to play that the college kids are listening too. Those songs are filled with crazy noises and echo effects with random words strung together willy-nilly. I’ve heard those songs are filled with code words for narcotics. Those bands have stupid names like Electric Prunes, Blues Magoos, Jefferson Airplane, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Peanut Butter Conspiracy and Chocolate Watchband.”
